OpenAI and Anthropic just committed $5.5B to deploy AI with human engineers. Banks. Fortune 500s.. but 400 million SMBs get nothing - and nobody's building for them.
Think about what this move actually says.
OpenAI and Anthropic have the best models in the world.
Both have more compute than most countries.
And both concluded that the only way to get AI working inside real businesses.. is to send in humans.
Yes, this is the Palantir FDE playbook. Embed engineers inside companies. Learn the workflows. Build the system around the business, not the other way around.
But wtf does an FDE actually do?
An FDE's job isn't just technical setup. It's taking the expertise, judgment, and instincts that live inside people's heads (aka business context) and making the AI wear the shape of that business.
How does this company think? How does it decide? What does a good outcome look like here? That work can't be skipped. And it can't be automated.
But here's where it breaks down.. it's all about unit economics.
A senior FDE costs $250K-$500K/year, depending on seniority. And that's before travel etc.
The math only works if your client is paying $1M+.
Bank of America? Sure. Your $60K/year SaaS customer? not a fu**ing chance..
The companies that can afford human FDEs represent maybe 1% of global businesses. The other 99% have the same need.
The same broken implementations.
The same AI that's smart but doesn't know how their business works.
And zero solutions built for them.

Before your next AI demo, prepare one question: how does this tool learn the specific context of how my business operates?

If the answer is "you can customize prompts" or "you can upload your data," that is a yellow flag. That means you are doing the FDE's job yourself, for free.

The real test is not about features. Every tool that makes you adapt to it is charging you an invisible tax: your time, your team's time, and the constant drift between how you actually operate and how the tool thinks you do. Add that up before you sign your next renewal.
